Emiliano Alfaro’s brace was enough on the day as NorthEast United brushed aside FC Goa to make it two wins in two…

Emiliano Alfaro was the star on show at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati as the Uruguayan’s brace (20′, 62′) set NorthEast United on course for a 2-0 home win over FC Goa, making it two wins in two for the Highlanders, sending them to the top of the Indian Super League (ISL) standings.

NorthEast United’s head coach Nelo Vingada made a solitary change to his eleven from the opening day victory against Kerala Blasters. Defensive midfielder Wellington Priori was introduced as a replacement for Nicolas Velez, as the Highlanders chose to go in with only one attacking option in Alfaro.

Halicharan Narzary kept his place but was shifted to the left flank as Katsumi Yusa was pushed into the right channel, a position he was familiar to playing in at Mohun Bagan. Marquee Didier Zokora, who was declared unfit for the full ninety, was benched yet again.

Confidence will be high in the NorthEast United FC camp as they picked up full points over the weekend in the Indian Super League season three opening tie as they edged past Kerala Blasters 1-0. NorthEast United FC midfield will see Rowllin Borges start in the middle of the park. Marquee signing Didier Zokora could start alongside him if deemed fit, else his compatriot Romaric would once again be named in the first eleven. Upfront Emiliano Alfaro, who doesn’t look the fittest player by far, and the lively Nicolaz Velez will shoulder the responsibility to score goals. Robert Cullen could make it to the bench for this tie.

FC Goa have a lot of injury concerns. Robin Singh recently joined the injured bandwagon by limping out of the training session. The Goan outfit has had to cancel practice matches against DSK Shivajians and India Under-19 owing to poor condition of the Nagoa ground in Verna. Goa could possibly sign a foreign goalkeeper in the coming days as they only have Kattimani and youngster Sukhdev Patil who are fit for the ISL’s opening round of games. Julio Cesar will be a handy option on the bench to call for as the 36 year old former Lokomotiv Moscow midfielder is a dead-ball specialist.
