Big picture

FC Pune City (FCPC) were excellent at home matches under David Platt in 2015 to occupy the top half of the points table for a significant length of time, but then their campaign unravelled once they started travelling, eventually missing out on the playoffs. 2016 has been an almost mirror-image, with their only win in the first three games coming away to FC Goa and narrow defeats in both their home games thus far. Pune’s record against Kerala Blasters hasn’t been the most encouraging, but they did record their only win in four matches last season in a pulsating 3-2 result at home. This will also the be the last of four matches that coach Antonio Habas has to sit out owing to a suspension from 2015 from his time with Atletico de Kolkata, so a positive result will set it up well for a reunion with the boss.

Kerala Blasters (KBFC) arrested a nine-match winless streak with a 1-0 win in their last game at home against Mumbai City FC. The results in three home games got successively better — starting with a defeat to Atletico de Kolkata and a draw with Delhi Dynamos FC. It is just the start of the season, but Steve Coppell’s team will take a lot of heart from the defensive discipline shown in the last two games, both of which have resulted in clean sheets, with the defensive pairing of Cedric Hengbart and marquee Aaron Hughes looking rock-solid against Mumbai.

After a dismal start to their Indian Super League (ISL) campaign, having lost both their opening games, Kerala Blasters have earned four points from their last two. One of the major factors in their recent run of form has been the vociferous support for Kerala at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi.

The Yellows will not however, have the aforementioned support on Monday as they come up against a Pune side that will be hungry to grab all honours.

The home team head into the game on the back of a disappointing 0-1 defeat to NorthEast United. It looked like Pune were in with a chance to salvage a point out of the game but Emiliano Alfaro scored the winner late into the second half. The result would have come as a disappointment, especially after the 2-1 win versus FC Goa.
